An official said that 33 people, including children, were saved when a fire broke out at an apartment complex’s electric meter box early on Saturday morning in Mumbai’s western district of Andheri East.

According to him, nobody was hurt in the fire that started at approximately 8:51 am and was extinguished at 10:45 am on the ground plus four-story Saki Cooperative Housing Society at the D’Souza Compound in Sakinaka.

“The fire was level one, or low intensity. 33 occupants were saved, including two babies and four men and three women from the first level, 16 people from the second floor, and 10 people from the third and fourth floors. For the rescue effort, many ladders were used, the official said.

Fire personnel removed one window grille of the apartment to enter the home and rescue tenants since the meter box is on the bottom level of the building and it would be dangerous for anyone living in the apartments above to descend, he added.

The official said that in addition to fire brigade members, a water truck, ambulance, and other equipment were used to put out the fire.

According to him, the fire was contained to the wiring, installations, panel boards, etc. in the building’s ground and first-floor meter cabins.

The officer stated that an investigation is being conducted to determine the fire’s origin.
