The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved 34 applications from different Russian institutions, which is a major step toward improving commercial relations between India and Russia. These licenses would make it possible for 14 illustrious Indian commercial lenders to establish special rupee vostro accounts. The declaration was made on July 2 at a parliamentary meeting.

Anupriya Patel, the minister of state for commerce and industry, underscored the significance of this move by pointing out that trade between India and Russia has been suffering because of the effects of Western sanctions on significant Russian banks. Due to the sanctions, there have been concerns with insurance and reinsurance coverage, as well as logistical problems as a result of shipping and logistics firms refusing to handle goods with a destination in Russia.

The Indian government has implemented a number of efforts to get over these obstacles and improve the trading relationship. Initiatives to conduct commerce in national currencies, the seamless functioning of the Eastern Maritime (Chennai-Vladivostok) Corridor, and the International North-South Transport Corridor are a few of these actions.

The RBI published rules on July 11 enabling foreign banks to create Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVA) in Indian commercial banks in response to the changing nature of international commerce. As a result, 14 Indian commercial banks have already accepted 34 applications from different Russian banks to create SRVAs.

Minister Anupriya Patel responded to the EU’s due-diligence proposal on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CSDD) by stating that the Indian government consults extensively with pertinent ministries, business associations, and trade experts to solidify India’s position on bringing up these issues at the appropriate international fora. The EU’s competent authorities have not yet adopted the legislative directive on CSDD that the European Commission has proposed. A agreement on the CSDD across the various EU authorities is the goal of ongoing negotiations between the European Parliament and the EU Council.

Minister Patel also emphasized that the CSDD’s full effects wouldn’t be known until the legislation actually went into force.
