Mumbai police have detained more than 20 people in connection with a fight between two groups in the Malvani region, an official said on Friday, amid widespread skirmishes that broke out across states during Ram Navami on Thursday.
The incident happened on Thursday at Malvani in the Malad (West) area while the parade was taking place and some people complained to the loud DJ and music that was playing in the background.
The official said, “The police have so far detained more than 20 people on suspicion of rioting and the procedure to placing them under arrest is ongoing.”
Stones were thrown during the conflict between the two groups, which caused terror in the neighbourhood. According to the official, more police officers were sent, and they used physical force to disperse the throng.
Top police officers and a few local political figures reportedly raced to the scene and made peace appeals.
After the incident, right-wing organisation supporters gathered in front of the Malvani police station and asked that individuals who were reportedly throwing stones be punished.
The situation was brought under control after several police officers were sent to the neighbourhood, he said.
