Sanjay Raut, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), alleged on Sunday that Rahul Gandhi’s refusal to be restored as a member of the Lok Sabha was due to the Union government’s fear of the Congressman, notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s decision to suspend his conviction in a 2019 defamation case over his “Modi surname” statement.
Gandhi’s conviction in the case had been overturned by the Supreme Court on August 4, which allowed for his restoration as the MP for Kerala’s Wayanad in the Lok Sabha.
“After the SC overturned the verdict, it is difficult to see how quickly he was removed from office as a member of parliament. The Lok Sabha Speaker has failed to restore him after three days, Raut informed reporters.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader: “Rahul Gandhi is still not reinstalled as MP because the Central government is afraid of him.
Raut criticized both the delay and the speaker’s assertion that he must consider the SC judgment, saying, “We (opposition bloc) INDIA parties are meeting tomorrow to discuss our strategy.”
Gandhi was disqualified from serving as LS MP on March 24 after being given a two-year prison term in the case by the metropolitan court in Surat, Gujarat, the previous day. After his request for a stay of execution was denied by the Gujarat High Court on July 7, he sought the Supreme Court on July 15.
