After Protest, Twitter Now Refers Both NPR And The BBC As Being “government-funded”

Twitter has recently revised its position and now refers to the US radio network NPR as “government-funded” after getting criticism for calling it “state-affiliated media.”
Elon Musk’s social media network has also given the BBC, which is mostly funded by licence fees paid by British families, that new title. The renowned national broadcaster of Britain has called Twitter to ask for explanation.
On Saturday night, Twitter silently altered the way it refers to the Washington-based station after National Public Radio protested that the phrase “state-affiliated” is disparaging and misleading.
Twitter linked NPR to state-run media organisations in China and Russia last week.
NPR ceased tweeting in opposition. With its modified Twitter profile, NPR’s main account, which has more than 8.8 million followers, encouraged people to “find us anywhere else you read the news.”
NPR CEO John Lansing found Twitter’s action “inappropriate,” and the radio station’s account hasn’t been active since.
For instance, NPR’s music and politics names did not meet the criteria for “state-affiliated” accounts yet they still tweeted.
Musk acted against NPR after Twitter removed The New York Times’ verified status; like NPR, it is regularly accused of left-leaning bias, notably by American conservatives.
According to Twitter regulation, the choices will reduce the number of tweets from both businesses, decreasing their exposure on a platform that is nonetheless an essential route of communication for media organisations, public figures, and celebrities.
In recent weeks, Musk added an automated poop emoji response to emails submitted to the website’s primary press address. Musk has long stated his deep disdain for the media.
Yet according to a Thursday NPR article, Musk had suggested in a string of emails that the relabeling may not have been “correct” and that Twitter will look into the matter further.
Musk commented to NPR, “It seems like that may not be correct in this scenario.” According to Musk, Twitter’s guiding concept is “just fair and equal treatment,” therefore if we classify non-US accounts as government, we need to do the same for the US.
According to its website, the bulk of NPR’s income comes from the nation’s member stations, who pay membership dues. Public and private monies are used to sustain these stations in turn.
Less than 1% of the operational budget for NPR, one of the most recognised news organisations in America, comes from government funding, the organisation told AFP.
