Alex de Minaur advanced to the National Bank Open quarterfinals on Friday by defeating second-seeded Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (7), 7-5.
Australian tennis player De Minaur said, “I had to play some of my best tennis today. “So far, this week has been fantastic for me. Today I played ethically. I believe that after playing him at the close of last year, I felt more optimistic about my chances. I just had to play correctly, and I am really pleased of the effort and my continued survival.
On a beautiful, sunny day at Sobeys Stadium, Medvedev, the Russian who won the 2021 in Toronto, had seven double-faults, the latest of which came on match point.
In their first career Masters 1000 semifinal, De Minaur will take against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a matchup of unseeded players. De Minaur won his sixth championship of his career in Acapulco in March.
In the first quarterfinal, Davidovich Fokina defeated American Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2.
The top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz of Spain took against the 12th-seeded Tommy Paul of the United States in the night session, while the seventh-seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy squared off against Gael Monfils of France.
