Cricket has been formally added to the Los Angeles Olympics schedule for 2028, marking the sport’s return to the Summer Games after a 123-year absence.
Other sports accepted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its 141st session were flag football, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and T20 cricket, which will be contested.
“The IOC Session has approved the request from the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (@LA28) to add five additional sports to the schedule.
The IOC said on X, previously Twitter, “Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash will be on the schedule at LA28.”
Only two of the 99 IOC members that cast votes rejected the idea to add the five sports that the LA28 organizing committee advocated.
Following a vote on the Executive Board’s proposal via a show of hands, IOC President Thomas Bach announced cricket’s admission among other sports.
Bach stated, “I welcome all of you to the Olympic program.
There has only ever been one previous Olympic cricket match, which England won against France in Paris in 1900.
