For bank staff, the five-day workweek can take some time. According to a report, this is because private sector banks and cooperative banks have not yet come to an agreement. The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and state-owned banks have, nevertheless, struck an in-principle agreement about the five-day workweek.

The idea must also be approved by the RBI. In accordance with Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, the government must also declare every Saturday a holiday.

Currently, every month’s second and fourth Saturdays are bank holidays. Employees will have to put in an additional 40 minutes of labor each day when the five-day workweek is adopted, from 9.40 am to 5.20 pm as opposed to the present 9 am to 5 pm.

The United Forum of Bank Unions and the Indian Banks’ Association have concluded their negotiations, but the proposal still has to be sent to the Ministry of Finance. Before it can be announced by the government, discussions would also need to be held with the Reserve Bank of India and private sector banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks will need to be brought on board, the article cited a source as saying.

“This is necessary to ensure that not only cheque clearing and other functions are not impacted, but also the business of public sector banks does not get hit if private banks remain open,” the person was cited as saying in the newspaper.
