Mumbai’s monsoon and monsoon rains are famous all over the country. Monsoon rains bring many problems for Mumbaikars. Monsoon is going to knock soon across the country. Keeping this in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday said that citizens in Mumbai will get weather information on their mobile phones through SMS during monsoon. According to BMC, “In case of emergency, an SMS alert will be sent to the citizens.”
BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday chaired a meeting with various agencies on disaster management as part of the preparations for the monsoon. Officials from BEST, MMRDA, MSRDC, PWD, Mumbai Metro, Railways, NDRF, IMD, MHADA and other agencies attended the meeting. The District Disaster Management Department has set up a control room to provide timely alerts regarding weather conditions, which has a mechanism to provide real time weather alerts.
Along with this, Chahal has directed all departments and agencies to speed up coordination to reduce the potential challenges during monsoon. For the smooth running of suburban trains, Chahal directed the BMC’s Horticulture Department to complete the pruning of trees in the railway premises by the end of May.
Let us tell you that more than 70 lakh people use trains here every day. Along with this, de-watering pumps will be installed at 480 places in Mumbai, where waterlogging may occur during heavy rains and these pumps will also be monitored by CCTV cameras. At the same time, after May 15, except in case of emergency, permission will not be given to dig roads in Mumbai.
Many types of diseases increase in monsoon. For this, BMC has reserved 3,000 beds for patients of monsoon related diseases. At the same time, BMC said that now there will be arrangement of five schools in every ward in case of emergency like heavy rains to provide shelter to the citizens. The effect of rain also falls on weak buildings. In view of this, Chahal said that notice should be given to vacate the people living in dangerous buildings and alternative arrangements should be made for their stay.
According to the order of the High Court, water supply should be stopped in such dangerous buildings. Accordingly, Municipal Commissioner Chahal instructed to take necessary measures by proper coordination at the District Collectorate level. He also asked to make a policy for the construction of safe walls.
Indian Navy has also informed about its teams and divers, who will be ready in case of emergency. Chahal also instructed the Mumbai Fire Brigade to be alert for any emergency. BMC was informed that NDRF has formed three teams for monsoon related emergency in Mumbai. Additionally, a team will be deployed in the eastern suburbs.
