Chandrayaan-3 Of India Successfully Completes The Last De-boosting Operation, Bringing It Closer To The Moon

According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-3, India’s lunar mission, has successfully completed its last de-boosting procedure.

The Lander Module (LM) of the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s orbit was successfully decreased, according to India’s space agency, sending it even closer to the moon.

According to PTI, the national space agency also said that the LM will now go through internal inspections.

On August 23 in the evening, the LM, which consists of the lander “Vikram” and the rover “Pragyan,” is anticipated to make contact with the lunar surface.

The LM orbit has successfully been lowered to 25 km x 134 km thanks to the second and final deboosting (slowing down) operation. At the planned landing spot, the module would go through internal inspections and wait for sunrise. On August 23, 2023, at about 1745 IST, the powered descent is anticipated to start, according to ISRO’s tweet on ‘X’ (previously Twitter).

35 days after the mission’s July 14 launch, the LM of Chandrayaan-3 successfully disengaged from the Propulsion Module on Thursday.

ISRO had previously stated that following the separation, the lander is anticipated to undergo “deboost” (the process of slowing down) operations to place it in an orbit where the soft landing on the south pole of the Moon will be attempted and where the orbit’s Perilune (closest point to the Moon) and Apolune (farthest point from the Moon) are both 30 kilometers.

They added that at an altitude of about 100 m, the lander would scan the surface to see if there are any obstacles before starting to descend to make a soft landing. At around 30 km altitude, they said, the lander enters the powered braking phase and starts using its thrusters to reach the surface of the moon.

According to the statement, Chandrayaan-3 was launched on July 14 and reached the lunar orbit on August 5. Thereafter, orbit reduction maneuvers were performed on the satellite on August 6, 9, 14, and 16 in preparation for the separation of both of its modules on August 17 and the landing on August 23.

Since its launch on July 14, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has been moved five times, according to ISRO, placing it in orbits that are becoming further and farther from Earth.

Then, on August 1, the spacecraft was successfully launched from Earth’s orbit toward the Moon in a crucial maneuver known as a slingshot.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft left its orbit above the Earth after its trans-lunar injection and started traveling in a direction that would bring it close to the moon.
