Chidambaram Criticizes The BJP For Shifting Its Position On The Caste Census

Senior Congressman P Chidambaram attacked the Center on Sunday for reversing its position on the caste census, claiming that the BJP has abruptly decided that a decision would be made only after engaging all parties.

He said that it makes sense to count caste as long as “Reservation” remains the policy.

“After trashing the promise of a caste census as ‘divide and rule,’ the BJP has suddenly concluded that a decision on the issue will be taken after ‘consulting everyone,’” Chidambaram said in a post on X.

He said that the notion of a caste census had received backing from almost all major political parties.

Chidambaram said, “It makes sense that caste must be considered as long as ‘Reservation’ remains the policy.

Following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on Friday that the BJP had never been against the notion of a caste census but would make the proper judgments after consulting everyone, he made these statements.

His remarks coincide with Congress’s and a few other parties’ adamant demands that the exercise be conducted nationally.

At the BJP state headquarters, Shah was speaking with media about the party’s agenda for the Chhattisgarh elections that are taking place this month.
