The National Commission for Women (NCW) demanded “strict action” against Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and party leader HS Ahir for their “lewd and derogatory” social media posts criticising actor Kangana Ranaut, according to a letter sent to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday.
The deplorable behaviour of Mr. HS Ahir and Ms. Supriya Shrinate horrifies NCW. Such an attitude is unacceptable and degrades women’s dignity. Rekha Sharma, the chief of NCW, has written to ECI requesting swift and severe action against them. Let’s continue to treat all women with dignity and respect, NCW wrote on X (previously Twitter).
Sharma also commented on X in response to rumoured comments made by Shrinate about Ranaut, saying, “You (Kangana) are a fighter and shining star.” Best wishes, and keep shining. composing a letter to ECI.”
The image from Shrinate’s Instagram account, which manages social media for the Congress, sparked the debate on Monday. Ranaut was singled out because she stands for the next Lok Sabha elections.
“Is there someone who can tell me the Mandi market’s current rate?” the post was read. It was made after an image of the actor running for parliament from her native state of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi Lok Sabha seat on behalf of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The former journalist Shrinate subsequently explained that the “extremely inappropriate” post was created by someone from her Facebook and Instagram accounts, which have now been removed, and that “many people” have access to them.
“Anyone who knows me is also well aware of the fact that I am incapable of making crude or personal remarks about any lady. In an audio-visual statement, she added, “I was curious as to how this occurred.
Ahir, the Gujarati Congress leader, provided a like ‘explanation.’
He said on the social media site, “Someone who had access to my X accounts posted a disgusting and objectionable post, which has been taken down.”
The grand old party and none of its senior leaders have responded to the BJP’s demand that the Congress intervene in the case.
