Digvijaya Singh, a senior Congress politician, said on Sunday that he is a “good Hindu” and has paid Rs 1.11 lakh towards the building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

In Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Singh made these remarks before of the polls.

Singh, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, said, “I am a decent Hindu and I follow Sanatana Dharma. But it’s against the law to utilize religion in elections.”

“While I contributed Rs 1.11 lakh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan contributed Rs 1 lakh towards the building of Ram Mandir. To be submitted to the trust, I sent PM Modi the check. I was prompted to submit it myself when he sent it back. I turned it in,” Singh was reported by ANI to have said.

Less than a week has passed since Singh and the current chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, got into an argument over the latter’s performance of “Kanya Puja” at his home on the last day of Navratri.

The CM had been criticized by the Congress leader, who referred to him as a “dramebaaz” (a performer). “Avoid discussing the chief minister. I have never met a chief minister who is such a liar. Such a person has never been seen acting on stage. He had remarked, “Now even PM Modi is afraid of him.”

In retaliation, Chouhan had said, “Diggvijaya Singh ji called this ‘natak-nautanki’ when the entire country was performing ‘kanya pujan’ yesterday.” Individuals such as yourselves cannot stand the respect women get.Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi, who are you assuming are worshiping our girls as ‘nautanki’? Congress needs to make this plain.

In Madhya Pradesh, where elections are scheduled for November 17, the BJP is attempting to hold onto power. The 2020 fall of the Congress administration brought the saffron party to power. On December 3, there will be a vote count.
