Police in Navi Mumbai said on Saturday that a 38-year-old Customs superintendent reportedly killed himself by plunging into a pond close to Taloja prison.

On Friday, his corpse was discovered floating in the ocean.

According to a top Navi Mumbai Police officer, the late Indian Revenue Service (IRS) employee, Mayank Singh, left behind a one-page suicide note in which he accused six people of harassing him, including three Customs officers.

He said that authorities had reported an unintentional fatality and are looking into the matter from many aspects. No one has yet been arrested for aiding in suicide.

According to the police official, Singh was the subject of a complaint filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last week for allegedly passing an import shipment without the proper customs fees. After filing a case of corruption, the CBI conducted a search of Singh and others’ homes two days before.

Singh may have taken the drastic action because he was depressed after the filing of the complaint, according to the officer.

Singh is accused of accepting payments from two businesses in exchange for releasing their products before the Customs agency could collect a Rs 14.5 lakh fine. The products were detained by the Customs Intelligence Unit at the JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) bond storage in Raigad.
