A joint venture between Adani Realty and the state government, Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), Mumbai, started gathering data from thousands of Dharavi’s informal residents on Monday in preparation for what is being referred to as “the largest urban rejuvenation projects in the world” and “the first step towards making Mumbai slum-free.”
“The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and Government of Maharashtra survey is the first step towards rendering Mumbai slum-free and the start of one of the biggest urban regeneration initiatives in the world. It’s the start of turning Dharavi into a cutting-edge metropolis inside Mumbai, a world-class township. A DRPPL representative added, “We implore all Dharavikars to support this exercise, which will enable us to carry out the rehabilitation process and ultimately provide them with their dream home.”
“This is an important day for us,” stated SVR Srinivas, the officer on special duty (OSD) of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. This survey will serve as the foundation for all of our future development. We’ve started assigning distinct IDs to each house. Our teams will survey every family on a socioeconomic basis.
In 2008, a survey was carried out, but the criteria had changed. “The upper structure was not calculated in the previous survey. Under the programme, we will give away free homes to all ground floor buildings that are safeguarded by government regulations. According to Srinivas, “the rental housing scheme, which will be conducted on salt pan lands, will require the tenants on upper floors to choose hire purchase.”
The state government will use the information to establish the rehabilitation eligibility requirements for the suggested redevelopment project. Additionally, the survey will establish a “Digital Dharavi,” a state-of-the-art library situated in one of the biggest informal settlements globally, for the first time.
Every informal habitation was assigned a unique number once the survey started in Kamla Raman Nagar. The road will then be laser mapped, a process called “Lidar Survey.” Every tenement will have a staff of trained individuals who will come with an application created locally to scan papers.
A toll-free number (1800-268-8888) has been set up to address Dharavikars’ questions and concerns.
