Due To Pre-monsoon Maintenance, Mumbai Airport Will Be Closed On May 2

Both runways—RWY 09/27 and 14/32—will be temporarily non-operational on May 2 for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work as part of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s (CSMIA) monsoon contingency plan.

A NOTAM, or Notice to Airmen, has been issued in this respect. The temporary closure will take place between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm. From May 2 after 5 p.m., all operations will continue as normal.

A backup plan will assist preserve operational continuity and guarantee passenger safety since the temporary runway closure is an annual occurrence.

Over 900 airplane movements are seen at CSMIA per day, one of the busiest single runway airports in the whole world.

Over 1,033 acres of the airport are covered by a network of runways, taxiways, and aprons.

Specialists examine the runway surface for wear and tear that might have resulted from regular operations and work to reinforce the airside strip as part of the annual routine of runway maintenance work.

Authorities said that in coordination with its many partners, including airlines and aviation authorities, CSMIA had painstakingly and strategically planned the runway repair work.

Over 92,000 ATMs operate at Mumbai Airport during the monsoon’s four crucial months, carrying almost 10 million travelers to India’s financial capital.

According to a press release, the maintenance work is a component of the airport’s monsoon contingency plan, which was developed to respond to and mitigate any potential issues that might arise due to unfavorable weather in the city during the monsoon season. This will ensure business continuity and give all airlines and passengers the assurance that the airport operates around-the-clock.
