On Sunday, Manchester United defeated Fulham at Old Trafford, winning 3-1, to advance to the FA Cup semifinals.
Aleksandar Mitrovic gave Fulham the lead before two players and manager Marco Silva were dismissed in a tense five minutes, ending their FA Cup hopes.
At Old Trafford, when United had a 1-0 lead in the quarterfinal round, the game was turned around after Willian handled Jadon Sancho’s goal-bound attempt.
In the 50th minute, Mitrovic had given the visitors the lead.
Until Willian blocked on the line, Sancho seemed poised to tie the game.
Referee Chris Kavanagh was requested by VAR to assess the incident on a monitor on the side of the pitch, where it was evident that Willian used his arm to deflect the shot.
Willian was subsequently dismissed for the professional foul of the handball after Silva received a red card for his altercation on the sidelines. Another red was given to Mitrovic for his irate response.
In the 75th and 77th minutes, Marcel Sabitzer and Bruno Fernandes both converted penalty kick goals to give United a 2-1 advantage.
In the extra time of the second half, Fernandes scored his second goal of the contest to guarantee his team’s qualification for the tournament’s final four.
The game was won by United 3-1.
