A farmer from Hingoli in Maharashtra, who is struggling with a debt of almost Rs 20 lakh, sent a letter to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde asking for compensation for his crop losses and threatening to commit suicide if he does not get it.

Gajanan Narayan Awchar, a native of Sapatgaon in the Sengaon taluka of Hingoli, claimed to have a pomegranate plantation on more than a hectare of land in a letter to the chief minister on July 23. The farmer said that since the COVID-19 epidemic, he has been unable to sell his goods in any market, and that crop illnesses over the last two years have raised his losses to Rs 50 lakh.

Awchar said he had no way of supporting his family of five since he owed a bank roughly Rs 5 lakh and another financial institution Rs 15 lakh in a letter sent to the chief minister’s office on July 24. The farmer said that since he couldn’t pay back the loan, the bank had been sending him reminders and that he was being mentally tormented.

He said in the letter, “The government should compensate, or else there is no choice for me except to commit suicide.
