IIT Indore said on Thursday that Dr. K Sivan, a renowned space scientist and former head of ISRO, had been named the board of governors’ chairman for a three-year term.
According to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore, which this year inaugurated a programme in Space Science and Engineering, Dr. Sivan succeeds Professor Deepak B Phatak, whose term ended on August 21.
After the accomplishment of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar research mission, India was elevated to an exclusive league of countries by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which has its headquarters in Bengaluru. India made history by being the first nation to successfully land a spacecraft close to the south pole of the Moon.
From 2018 until 2022, Dr. Sivan oversaw ISRO and was in charge of the organization’s Chandrayaan-2 mission, which was launched on July 22, 2019.
Prof. Suhas Joshi, the director of IIT Indore, expressed his happiness and excitement at having Dr. Sivan, a graduate of IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay, serve as the board of governors chairman.
When India accomplished a historic milestone with the successful launch of Chandrayaan-3 and shown its strength and competence in space engineering, there could not have been a better moment to welcome him into the IIT Indore family. According to Pro Joshi, IIT Indore has launched 10 new academic programs this academic year, including a BTech in Space Science and Engineering degree, making it the first IIT in the nation to offer it. He said that the program can accommodate 20 pupils, including 4 girls.
IIT Indore will, in my opinion, have the chance to help the nation’s space mission by working in the untouched fields of space engineering under Dr. Sivan’s direction, he said.
