Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, responded on Saturday to a question about the repeated requests for his apologies from the BJP by saying, “My name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not give an apology to anybody.
After being disqualified from the Lok Sabha, the former Congress leader made the comments at a news conference.
Asking whether he may have regretted his comments in court for which he was found guilty of defamation and responding to requests from the BJP asking his apologies, he said, “Rahul Gandhi believes my name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi, Gandhi does not provide apology to anybody.”
Gandhi often attacked the late Hindutva philosopher V D Savarkar, claiming that out of fear, he had assisted the British monarchs and sent a plea for compassion to them.
He said at the press conference that he had requested permission to speak in Parliament but had not received it.
“I twice wrote to the Speaker, then I walked up to him and begged him to let me speak since you are the guardian of democracy. He grinned and replied, “I can’t do it.” I may have to go to Modi ji at that point, but he won’t let me talk if you can’t do it “explained Gandhi.
Thus, the Congress leader stated, “My argument is that democracy in this country is ended, people cannot express what is on their minds, institutions here are under assault, and the mechanism of that attack is the tie between Narendra Modi and Adani.
Gandhi said at the press conference that he would continue to enquire into the Adani situation.
Gandhi said that “ministers lied about me” and that “I did not advocate for foreign involvement (abroad).
Gandhi was expelled from the Lok Sabha on Friday, one day after being found guilty of defamation in a case in Surat, Gujarat.
Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, would not be eligible to run for office again in the Lok Sabha for eight years unless a higher court overturns his sentence.
