Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court Grants Bail to Imran Khan in 8 Judicial Complex Violence Cases
In a significant development, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has granted bail to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in eight cases related to the violence that occurred outside the Islamabad Judicial Complex on May 10, 2023. The bail was approved on May 16, 2023, following Khan’s lawyer, Babar Awan, arguing that his client was innocent and had been falsely implicated by the government. Khan, who is a sitting member of parliament, will be required to provide a surety of Rs1 million and appear in court for all future hearings. Additionally, he has been ordered to abstain from delivering any inflammatory speeches or statements that may incite violence.
Opposing the bail, the prosecution claimed that Khan posed a threat to national security and could potentially flee the country if released. Nevertheless, the ATC judge, Raja Jawad Abbas Soomro, decided to grant bail to Khan, which has been viewed as a setback for the government’s efforts to keep him in custody. The decision allows Khan to continue leading his political party and campaign for the upcoming elections, thus boosting his political career.
Supporters of Imran Khan celebrated the ATC’s decision, considering it a victory for justice. They also criticized the government for attempting to silence Khan and his supporters. On the other hand, the government has not yet issued a response regarding the ATC’s decision.
The violence outside the Islamabad Judicial Complex occurred after Imran Khan was removed from power through a no-confidence motion, leading to clashes between his supporters and the police. The clashes resulted in injuries to several individuals and damage to property. Khan has accused the government of orchestrating the violence to frame him and his supporters, allegations that the government vehemently denies.
This development adds to the ongoing political crisis in Pakistan, and it remains to be seen how the government will react to the ATC’s decision and what implications it will have on the upcoming elections.
