On Friday, Mushfiqur Rahim completed the chase that Najmul Hossain Shanto had begun for Bangladesh, helping them defeat Ireland in a dramatic one-day international.
Rain delayed the match’s start, making it 45 overs apiece, but Harry Tector’s team-record 140 helped Ireland accumulate 319-6.
The basis for Bangladesh’s response was built by Najmul’s 117, and when four runs were required from the last four deliveries, wicketkeeper Mushfiqur struck a boundary to give Bangladesh a 1-0 series lead after two games.
Tuesday’s first ODI was canceled. The final game will take place on Sunday in Chelmsford.
Early in the chase, Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das were out, and Shakib Al Hasan scored 26 points while hitting five boundaries. When he was dismissed, Towhid Hridoy entered the field, and Bangladesh’s momentum was once again on the rise thanks to his combination with Najmul.
With their 131-run stand in only 17 overs, Bangladesh was cruising. Hridoy, though, was bowled out for 68 in the same over when Najmul got his first ODI hundred.
Hridoy batted well. I was helped by his intention,” Najmul stated.
After facing 93 balls, Najmul was out after repeatedly tugging Curtis Campher.
Bangladesh just needed 34 runs off 32 balls after Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 19-run cameo, but drama still occurred.
In the penultimate over, Mushfiqur hit Mark Adair straight to square leg, almost escaping a run out opportunity, but the high full toss was ruled a no ball. To win the game, Mushfiqur launched the extra ball over the wicketkeeper and to the boundary.
The Ireland openers were soon eliminated despite the bowlers’ disadvantages of the slippery, chilly weather and narrow field.
With the help of the captain, Andrew Balbirnie, Tector seized control. Irish confidence was boosted by three sixes in four balls from Taijul Islam, which helped Tector reach fifty off 54 deliveries.
George Dockrell joined Tector in a combative century stand after Balbirnie left for 42 in a stand of 98. Tector needed 93 balls to get his fourth ODI century. After striking his tenth six, a record for Ireland in an ODI, Tector fell after a delivery.
Dockrell tied his highest score for Ireland with an undefeated 74.
Balbirnie commented, “We were excellent, but not enough.
