Numbers showed Karnataka chief minister Basavraj Bommai ahead from the Shiggaon seat in the state’s Haveri district as early trends for the assembly elections filtered in.
Basavaraj Bommai, a BJP candidate and the current chief minister, received 12,679 votes, according to the Indian Election Commission. Shashidhar Yeligar of the JD(S) earned 1215 votes, while Pathan Pathan Yasirahmedkhan of the Congress received 6443.
In the 224-seat Assembly, the BJP won 104 members in 2018, falling short of the 113 seats needed for a majority. One of the seats it took was Shiggaon. Sayed Azeempeer Khadri of the Congress was in second place, followed by Somanna Urf Swamiling Bevinamarad, an independent.
Since the 2008 Karnataka assembly election, Bommai has won three elections as an MLA from Shiggaon. Following the resignation of previous CM BS Yediyurappa, he was appointed chief minister. Bommai won the district in the most recent election in 2018 with a margin of 9,260 votes.
Since 1999, the Congress has failed to capture the seat that was previously seen as a bastion. In 1999 and 2004, the JD(S) and independent candidates respectively won from this area. Bommai initially ran for office in the 2008 Assembly elections under the BJP banner after leaving the Janata Dal (United).
