In the Thane region of Maharashtra, a residential structure fell soon after midnight on Sunday, killing a lady and a baby and injuring five others.
According to the news agency PTI, which cited municipal authorities, the six-flat single-story structure on Durga Road in the Dhobi Talao neighborhood of Bhiwandi town fell around 12.35 am.
According to a source citing Yasin Tadvi, the head of Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management department, a team from the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) and firefighters from the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation went to the scene after being warned.
Seven people were rescued from the rubble during a nighttime search effort, the report added.
According to the official, an eight-month-old child and a lady perished, and five other people were hurt.
He said that the dead have been identified as Taslima Mosar Momin (age 8 months) and Uzma Atif Momin (age 40).
Four ladies and a 65-year-old male were reported to be among the wounded.
The report said that they had been admitted to a nearby hospital and were no longer in danger.
Around 3.30 am, the officer added, the task to remove the debris and finish the search and rescue operation was over.
According to an official mentioned in the story, it was unknown how old the building was and if it was on the list of unsafe constructions.
