According to a statement made on Sunday by an IMD official, the coastal area, which includes Mumbai and Madhya Maharashtra, is anticipated to see heavy to extremely severe rainfall during the next 48 hours.

The official stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall would be experienced over the Konkan, including Mumbai and Madhya Maharashtra, in the next 48 hours due to synoptic conditions including a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over the Kutch region of Gujarat, and an active trough spread over Maharashtra to coastal Karnataka.

The southwest monsoon has been rapidly spreading and reaching an increasing number of locations after a lengthy break, the official said. In the last 24 hours, there have been many water-logged areas around Mumbai and its suburbs, which has affected traffic on several highways.

It was an uncommon occurrence on Sunday when the monsoon simultaneously blanketed both Delhi and Mumbai. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Santacruz weather station, which is indicative of the suburbs, reported 176.1 mm of rain over the same 24-hour period as the Colaba observatory, which represents the island city, recorded 86 mm.
