Ireland: Biden Cries After Seeing Priest Who Conducted Son’s Final Rites

When his emotional trip to Ireland came to an end, US President Joseph Biden sobbed openly as he ran into his son’s funeral celebrant on Friday.

On the last day of a three-day trip to his ancestral home, the Irish-American president paid a visit to the renowned Roman Catholic pilgrimage site at Knock in northwest Ireland.

Later, in Ballina’s St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Biden will conclude his journey with an outdoor speech to tens of thousands of supporters.

Edward Blewitt, the ancestor of Vice President Joe Biden, sold the bricks used to build the Catholic church in 1828 and used the proceeds to pay for his family’s eventual immigration to the United States.

A connection between the Biden family and one of their priests, Father Frank O’Grady, who returned to Ireland after years of service as a chaplain in the US army, was only recently discovered by organizers at the Knock Shrine.

Beau Biden, the president’s son, passed away in 2015 at age 46 from brain cancer. The Catholic rituals were performed by Father O’Grady at the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital outside of Washington.

O’Grady wasn’t on the list of confirmed guests, but he quickly received security clearance.

Biden “despatched a Secret Service man to go and locate him because he wanted to see him immediately, “Father Richard Gibbons, the parish priest of Knock Shrine, said the BBC.

The fact that he came over after receiving the shock of his life was a fantastic instance of spontaneity.

He (Biden) was very upset and started weeping. We then prayed for his family and said a decade of the rosary.

“He lighted a candle and then went in for a little period of quiet prayer.”

O’Grady said he had a “lovely talk” with Irish network RTE “Around ten minutes were spent in the chapel at Knock Shrine with Biden, the president’s only surviving son Hunter, and sister Valerie Biden Owens.

“I was happy to see him, and he was happy to see me. He hugged me tightly. Hunter hugged me tightly. Like a family reunion, “added the priest.

“He informed me that Beau Biden appreciated all that had been done for him.”

The US president then visited a neighboring hospice run by the Mayo Roscommon Foundation with his sister, son, and Irish relative Laurita Blewitt.

He attended the groundbreaking of the structure in 2017, and a plaque there honors Beau Biden.

– ‘I’M HOME’ –

Biden was scheduled to go to Ballina, a charming riverside town that was proudly flying American flags and red, white, and blue bunting as residents packed the streets in eager expectation.

After Biden won the 2020 presidential election, Ballina ordered a five-meter-high (16-foot-high) painting depicting him. Most of the trip seems to have been planned by the White House to prepare for a 2024 reelection effort.

The Mocha Beans café in the town, where Blewitt ancestors still reside, modified its storefront sign to say “Mocha Biden.” “for the event.

“The excitement in Ballina today is fantastic, “Trevor Mangan, the cafe’s proprietor, said AFP.

When Biden visited Ballina as vice president, he gave Flori Garvin a soft toy donkey as a newborn. She was back with her grandmother, Elizabeth Robinson, who was now seven years old.

She hasn’t stopped discussing it, “said Robinson. She believes she will go visit him personally.”

One branch of the Biden family has roots in the neighboring county of Mayo, and the president visited a genealogical center to learn more about his ancestry.

At an address delivered to the Irish parliament on Thursday, Biden had stated: “I’m home.”

The president focused on how successful Irish immigrants were in starting new lives abroad before a prospective election rematch against Donald Trump.

The belief that brighter days are coming unites Ireland and the United States more than merely in hope “he said.

Biden, meanwhile, also delivered a stern warning that the UK “should be working closely with Ireland” after a contentious visit to Belfast before Dublin “a 25-year-old peace agreement in Northern Ireland must be protected.

Veteran nationalist leader Gerry Adams, who was in the crowd, gave Biden a hug after the speech. The former Sinn Fein leader uploaded a photo of the two of them on Twitter.

For many Northern Ireland pro-UK unionists, Adams is still a hate figure due to his alleged participation in the militant Irish Republican Army (IRA). Images were used to support claims that Biden is “anti-British.” “.

Leo Varadkar, the prime minister of Ireland, echoed the White House in rejecting that. He claimed that without being “overbearing or meddling,” Biden was eager to support the peace process “.
