Jordan is attempting to obtain the release of a legislator who was imprisoned by Israel on suspicion of smuggling weapons and gold into the West Bank, according to the kingdom’s foreign ministry on Sunday.
Imad al Adwan, a member of parliament who had driven through the major border crossing along the Jordan River earlier on Sunday, was being detained and questioned by Israeli police, according to Sinan al Majali, a spokesman for the Jordanian foreign ministry.
The ministry was making an attempt to learn more about the matter and quickly address it in collaboration with the necessary kingdom authorities, according to Majali.
A representative for the Israeli foreign ministry failed to respond to inquiries on the arrest.
Known for his outspoken hostility to Israel and for spearheading initiatives to have the nation’s peace treaty with Israel repealed, prominent legislator Khalil Atiya warned that the government would be held accountable if it did not act promptly.
Atiya said, “There shouldn’t be any room for the enemy to undermine the dignity of Jordanians by imprisoning and detaining a member of the parliament.”
Jordan, the Arab neighbor with which Israel shares the longest portion of its border, and Israel have tight security ties, but recent political tensions have arisen over Israel’s position on the right of the Palestinians to a state.
The majority of the kingdom’s populace is of Palestinian descent.
