Israeli Independence Day Celebrations Begin But Are Marred By Protests

Share

Israel’s traditional Independence Day festivities began on Tuesday evening, but tens of thousands of Israelis opted to protest the government’s disputed intentions to impose curbs on the court instead.

Protesters gathered in Tel Aviv waving the blue and white Israeli flags that have become a symbol of the weekly demonstrations against the judicial makeover plans, which are now entering their 16th week, while officials and distinguished visitors conducted the annual torch lighting ceremony in Jerusalem.

Although Independence Day is often a time for national unity among Israelis, there is still division over proposed legislation, which supporters claim would restore balance to Israeli authorities and opponents claim will eliminate checks on those in authority.

“This could be the final Fourth of July as we know it. Ido Durst, a 23-year-old demonstrator, told Reuters that things “might be completely different next year, like different rules or restrictions.” “Especially today, we must take a stand.”

Israel is commemorating its 75th anniversary while experiencing some of the most extreme societal divides since the nation was founded in 1948.

Memorial Day, a day dedicated to remembering the nation’s fallen soldiers, and Independence Day, which was observed the following day, have historically functioned as symbols of national unity in a country that has fought several wars since its founding.
