Asaduzzaman Khan, Bangladesh’s home minister, stated on Wednesday that a member of parliament (MP) from the ruling Awami League party had died in Kolkata.

“MP Anwarul Azim Anar has been killed in Kolkata, and three have been arrested in Bangladesh,” the news outlet ANI cited Khan as saying.

Since May 18, Anwarul Azim, a resident of Kolkata, West Bengal, has not been seen. On May 12, he had arrived in India. An extensive search was initiated to locate him.

Anwarul Azim was last seen on May 13 in the afternoon when he went to a house in Bidhannagar, close to Kolkata, for a medical examination with some pals. His family friend in Kolkata claimed, per the ANI report, that he hadn’t been in person since May 13 and that they hadn’t had any direct or physical contact with him since May 18.

Nevertheless, communications between Azim’s friend in Bidhannagar and his family in Dhaka have been sent from his phone, revealing his intended trip to Delhi.

Indian authorities started looking into the matter.
A joint investigation by Indian authorities has been opened into the MP of Bangaldesh’s death.

Visa procedures for Azim’s family members are in progress, and they are scheduled to arrive in Kolkata for additional formalities, according to ANI.

“I firmly think that this has occurred, as our Home Minister has declared…However, we have yet to get any reliable information from the Indian government. We will therefore need to wait. However, given that our Home Minister has already made the announcement, we suspect that he was murdered or assassinated. Shaban Mahmood, Minister (Press), High Commission for Bangladesh in New Delhi, told ANI that there could be several reasons for it.

“However, we lack precise knowledge…He visited Kolkata frequently and maintained cordial relations with the locals. Gopal Vishwas is a very good buddy of his. Perhaps he came here for business, therapy, or some other reason. We’re not sure. Today, his daughter is attempting to visit Kolkata.”

The MP’s daughter claimed she couldn’t get in touch with her father, so his family friend Gopal Viswas filed a missing person report at the Baranagar police station in Bidhannagar, Kolkata, earlier after the MP’s abrupt alleged absence.

Anwarul Azim called his assistant on the morning of May 16 but was unable to get through, according to ANI. The complaint, dated May 18, 2024, claimed that he did not answer when his PA contacted him back later.

“When I contacted him (Viswas), his daughter responded, ‘I can’t talk to my dad. After that, I (Viswas) called every acquaintance of Anarul Azim’s, but I was unable to get in touch with him,” the statement said.

“I was then requested to come to Baranagar police station on May 18 to register the complaint in the missing diary,” according to a copy of the complaint.
