A 28-year-old man was given a life sentence by a court in Maharashtra’s Thane district for the murder of a married lady in 2017 after she turned down his love proposal.

In the judgement issued on Tuesday, Principal District Judge Abhay J. Mantri also ordered the accused, Atul Kamlesh Singh, to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 or face an additional six months in jail.

The victim’s spouse was to get the fine money, per the court’s directive.

The court was informed by Additional Public Prosecutor Anil Ladwanjari that the 32-year-old married victim and the unmarried accused both lived in the same neighborhood in Thane’s Diva district.

Given that the lady had rejected the accused’s proposal, it was a one-sided love affair.

The victim’s family had moved to another apartment in the same neighborhood after harassment.

The defendant disliked the victim’s conversations with others.

When the victim’s spouse wasn’t home on April 24, 2017, the accused went to her residence and argued with her. The prosecution claims that he later assaulted her with a knife and slashed her neck.

Several neighbors responded to the woman’s yelling and went to assist her, but the door was locked from the inside, causing her husband to become aware of the situation. Later, the lady was discovered inside the residence, lying dead in a pool of blood.

According to the judge’s ruling, the prosecution has effectively established all of the allegations against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt, necessitating a conviction and sentencing.

In order to support its case, the prosecution questioned many witnesses, including the victim’s husband and neighbors.
