Police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have arrested a 60-year-old self-styled godman for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of ridding her of evil spirits and afflictions. An official gave this information on Tuesday. Police has initiated further legal proceedings in this matter.
A 35-year-old woman from Bhayandar area In Mumbai had approached the man, after which he took advantage of her situation and allegedly raped her on different occasions since 2016 on the pretext of helping her, an official of Bhayandar police station said.
The woman later realized that she had been duped on false promises and lodged a police complaint, he added. Based on the complaint, the police arrested the accused on Monday and registered a case against him under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prevention and Abolition of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, the official said.
