A resolution has been passed in a gram panchayat in Maharashtra’s Latur district, according to which children will lose their inherited property if they don’t take care of their elderly parents there. According to the proposal of the panchayat, if the elderly parents are not taken care of, then their sons and daughters-in-law will lose the right to inherit property. Deputy Sarpanch Satish Sindalkar told that this decision has been passed in the meeting of Yerol Gram Panchayat in Shirur-Anantpal tehsil.
Apart from Village Sarpanch Sukumar Lokre, Agriculture Assistant, Village Development Officer and villagers were also present in the meeting. Village Development Officer Keshav Madiboyne said that the issue of elderly parents not being taken care of by their sons and daughters-in-law was also discussed in the meeting. After discussion, it was decided that children who do not take care of elderly parents will be denied the benefits of government schemes. The Upsarpanch said that a resolution was passed unanimously to not enter the names of sons who do not take care of their parents under the right of inheritance in the Gram Panchayat records. He claimed that everyone in Latur district is welcoming the proposal.
Sindalkar said that apart from this, issues like removal of encroachment from the main road and square-intersections of the village, providing a graveyard for the Lingayat community, construction of community temple, supply of drinking water, encroachment-free roads and stopping illegal liquor business are also being taken up. Discussions were held and decisions were taken. The Panchayat hopes that after passing of this resolution, the cases of face-to-face abuse of elderly parents may come down and if the children do not take care of their parents properly, the elderly couple may evict their children from the property.
