The Central Railway has constructed a new escalator at Diva east in Maharashtra’s Thane district as part of its attempts to reduce trespassing instances, an official said on Monday.
The installation of a new escalator has given the Railways the opportunity to block public access to the level crossing, which has been the scene of incidents that have resulted in fatalities and delayed suburban and long-distance trains, according to the official.
Another escalator will be installed on platforms 1 and 2 for the benefit of commuters, he added, and the escalator for Diva west is also ready and will be inaugurated soon after testing. Trespassing is risky and is prohibited under the Railway Act of 1989, the officer added. The Railways has urged the public to use the escalators instead.
