An official said that a 40-year-old man who had been detained by the Mumbai police after being accused of murdering flight attendant Rupal Ogrey was discovered hanging there early on Friday.
He said that Vikram Athwal, the accused, was discovered hanged inside the bathroom of the Andheri police station with a pair of trousers serving as a noose. The police officer noted that it is believed to be a suicide case.
Ogrey, 24, was discovered late Sunday night in a rented apartment in the Andheri neighborhood of Marol with her neck cut. She traveled to Mumbai in April of this year for training with a prestigious private airline. She is from Chhattisgarh.
Athwal, who had been doing cleaning duties for the victim’s residential community during the previous year, was detained on Monday on suspicion of murdering her. He was kept in police custody by a local court until September 8.
The clothing he was wearing at the time of the crime were also found by the police, along with the knife that was reportedly used by him to murder Ogrey.
Athwal had two daughters and was married, according to the police. According to the police, Athwal and Ogrey used to dispute about trivial matters. According to their first investigation, Athwal entered Ogrey’s apartment under the pretense of retrieving a waste bag and cleaning the toilet before killing her.
