Manchester United Is Held By Sevilla In The Europa League As Juventus And Feyenoord Take The Lead

The outcome of Manchester United’s Europa League quarterfinal matchup against Sevilla is in doubt after the Spanish team earned a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Old Trafford thanks to two late own goals.

When Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen were beaten to a 1-1 tie by Belgian visitors Union Saint-Gilloise, Juventus and Feyenoord managed tight home victories.

The favorite to win this year’s championship, United, led by two goals in the first half at Old Trafford due to a brace from Marcel Sabitzer, seemed to be cruising to the semifinals.

At the halftime, they could have been out of reach, but Antony struck the post on a counterattack, and Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez both had to leave the game due to injuries for United.

Tyrell Malacia allowed a ball go by him in the area and then diverted a Jesus Navas cross into his own net in the 84th minute to help Sevilla mount a spectacular comeback.

After Varane had been substituted, Harry Maguire made a strong touch to divert a Youssef En-Nesyri header into the net in the second minute of extra time.

A Sevilla team that has a record six victories in the Europa League or its precursor, the UEFA Cup, may now feel confident about their prospects of winning the match when it returns to Spain the following week.

Ten Hag stated, “We gave up two own goals, horrible luck, and we have to cope with it. “We must learn to end the game, yet nothing is closed,”

– SCARE FOR SZCZESNY –

The victors of the matchup will play either Juventus or Sporting of Portugal in the semifinals. The Turin giants won the first leg of their quarterfinal matchup by a score of 1-0.

Although Juve had a scare when goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny left the game shortly before halftime due to chest issues, Federico Gatti scored the game’s lone goal in the 73rd minute.

The Polish international was subsequently replaced by Mattia Perin, who then sealed Juve’s victory in overtime with a brilliant double save.

“I was terrified since it was a first-time occurrence for me. I was anxious and terrified because I was having trouble breathing, Szczesny said after the game.

Early examinations for the former Arsenal goalkeeper found no significant health issues, according to the Italian club.

In the first leg of a match that is a rematch of the Europa Conference League final, which the Italian team won last season, Mats Wieffer scored the game’s lone goal early in the second half as Feyenoord, the league leaders in the Netherlands, defeated Jose Mourinho’s Roma 1-0.

– WEST HAM DRAW AT GENT –

Victor Boniface, a striker from Nigeria, gave Union Saint-Gilloise the lead against Leverkusen early in the second half, but Florian Wirtz quickly equalized.

West Ham United, a struggling Premier League team, was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Gent in Belgium in the Conference League quarterfinals after taking the lead when Danny Ings knocked in a Jarrod Bowen cross in first-half stoppage time.

Gent’s Hugo Cuypers restored parity just before the hour mark, and then Nigerian prodigy Gift Orban, who is now playing for the fourth-place team in Belgium’s top division, struck the post with an overhead kick.

Fiorentina defeated Lech Poznan 4-1 on the road in Poland to make it 10 wins in their previous 11 games in all competitions.

Terem Moffi of Nigeria scored twice for Nice in their 2-2 draw away to Basel in Switzerland, including one with a breathtaking overhead kick.

With goals from Michael Murillo and Majeed Ashimeru, Anderlecht beat AZ Alkmaar 2-0.
