Benchmark stock indexes lost some of their early gains on Tuesday and fell, with index heavyweight HDFC twins being a key contributor.
The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 146.79 points to 62,198.92 in a choppy trading after starting the morning well. To 18,366.70, the NSE Nifty fell 32.15 points.
The largest laggards among the Sensex companies were HDFC, HDFC Bank, Maruti, IndusInd Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, and ITC.
Among the top gainers were Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Bajaj Finserv, Wipro, Asian Paints, and Tata Consultancy Services.
Asia’s markets in Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong were all doing well.
Monday’s US market closed higher.
Brent crude, the benchmark for all other crude oils, increased 0.53 percent to USD 75.63 a barrel.
According to exchange statistics, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased shares of stock worth Rs 1,685.29 crore on Monday.
The Sensex increased 317.81 points or 0.51 percent on Monday to close at 62,345.71. The NSE Nifty index as a whole increased 84.05 points or 0.46 percent to close at 18,398.85.
