Microsoft Fires 276 Workers In A Fresh Wave Of Layoffs

In a fresh wave of employment cuts, Microsoft has laid off 276 people, mostly from its customer care, support, and sales divisions.

The most recent layoffs “go beyond the 10,000 global layoffs announced by Microsoft January 18,” according to Geek Wire.

276 Microsoft workers were let go in Washington State. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) states that the reductions would effect 66 virtual employees as well as 210 employees in the company’s Bellevue and Redmond locations.

A Microsoft spokeswoman stated in a statement that “organisational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business.”

The spokesman said, “We will continue to invest in and prioritise key development areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.

Jobs in sales and customer service were targeted in many articles on the popular professional networking site LinkedIn.

Microsoft cut 158 employees in Washington State in May, not including the 10,000 positions that had been previously reported.

The cutbacks announced earlier this year reportedly impacted over 2,700 people in the Seattle region. In January, Satya Nadella, the chairman and CEO of Microsoft, said that the organisation will be “making changes that will result in the reduction of our overall workforce by 10,000 jobs through the end of FY23 Q3 (third quarter)”.

As of early this year, the IT behemoth employed more than 220,000 people.
