The corpse of a six-year-old girl who had been reported missing from her house was discovered on Saturday hidden inside a plastic storage drum in a chawl room in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra’s Thane district.

An official claimed that after the girl’s corpse was found by the police on Friday in a chawl in the town’s Dhapsipada neighborhood, a murder complaint was then filed against unnamed individuals. He added that on September 13, the girl’s parents—factory workers—reported her missing from their home in the neighborhood and filed an abduction report with the police.

According to the official, a police crew looking for the missing toddler on Friday heard reports of a bad smell coming from a property nearby.

He said that the corpse had been transported to JJ Hospital in nearby Mumbai for a post-mortem after it was discovered packed in a plastic drum in a confined room of a chawl in the area. The official said that further investigation and a case under sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of crime) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code was being conducted to find the suspect.
