Mumbai registered the wettest July in the city’s history on Wednesday as a result of the continued rainy weather. With five days left in July, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Santacruz observatory reported 1512 mm of rain, shattering the previous Annual Total Rainfall (ATR) record of 1502 mm in 2020.
Between July 1 and July 26, the Santacruz observatory reported 1433 mm of rainfall as of 8:30 am. Rainfall in the city exceeded the previous record and was measured at 1557.8 mm around 8:30 pm on July 26 as severe, persistent downpours persisted throughout the city.
While this was happening, the IMD upped the city’s weather alert, putting it under the’red alert’ category and foreseeing particularly severe rainfall in remote areas. ‘Extremely heavy rainfall’ is anticipated in Mumbai and its surrounding regions from 8:00 p.m. on July 26 to the afternoon on July 27.
In light of the warning of heavy rain, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday announced a vacation for all public and private educational institutions on Thursday.
According to a statement released by the BMC, “Safety of stunts is a top priority, so the BMC has declared a holiday for all municipal, government-run and private primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, as well as all colleges in the city and suburbs on Thursday in light of the red alert issued for Mumbai.”
