Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Rainwater Drainage Department Implements Measures To Alleviate Waterlogging Woes

Mumbai: During heavy rains and high tides, many works have been undertaken by the Municipal Corporation’s Rainwater Drainage Department to avoid inconvenience to citizens due to accumulation of water in low-lying areas. Measures like RCC box drains, micro tunnelling, flood gates, water storage tanks, mini pumping stations will enable rapid harvesting of rainwater. Therefore, this year, the municipality has claimed that the citizens of Hindmata, Bharani Naka (Wadala fire station), Byculla, Shiv and Matunga stations, Mahalakshmi station, Nair Hospital will get relief.

Nair Hospital Morland Marg, M. A. Marg, Maratha Mandir Junction, Jacob Circle (Satarasta) in low lying areas of Byculla E and Worli G/South Divisions are prone to frequent waterlogging after heavy rainfall. Two channels of 1200 mm diameter have been laid by the rain water channel department to draw water from this place. From Mahalakshmi Railway Culvert Dr. e. These channels have been laid through a double barrel box drain in the works within the boundaries of G South Division up to Famous Studio Bus Stop on Moses Marg. A mini pumping station has been set up in the Western Railway premises near Mahalakshmi railway station. In Byculla E Division, the low lying area from Anandrao Nair Marg (Nair Hospital) to Ghas Galli gets waterlogged during heavy rains. As there is no network of rainwater channels at this place, the decision to construct a box drain was taken by the Rainwater Channels Department. Till now 45 percent work has been completed. Keeping this in mind, RCC box drains were constructed under the Brimstowad project by the Rainwater Drainage Department. 85 percent of this box drain has been completed.

A 900 mm diameter channel has been installed by the department. Along with this, a mini pumping station has been set up in the Wadala fire station area. Rainwater will be pumped here with the help of two pumps of 3000 cubic meters capacity.

Construction of RCC Box Drain, RCC Channels, Mini Pumping Station, Micro Tunneling 1800 mm diameter under Dharavi 90 feet road was undertaken in Principal Building (Shiv) as well as in Shiv and Matunga station areas. Before monsoon, temporary flood control gates will be erected at this place for the period of high tide. Therefore, this year’s rainy season, Shiv (Sion) and Matunga stations will get rid of the disruption of suburban local services due to water accumulation.

Construction of underground storage tank at Pramod Mahajan Park and St. Xavier’s Ground has been completed to pump and store the accumulated water in Hindmata area. The capacity of both these storage tanks is 6.48 crore litres. Therefore, citizens coming for medical treatment in the area of KEM, Tata, Wadia Hospitals will get relief. Also Dr. Mumbaikars will also get relief as the traffic on Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg will continue without any hindrance.
