Premier League: Roberto Firmino Scores A Late Equalizer As Liverpool Fights Back To Earn A 2-2 Draw With Arsenal

Share

On Sunday, Roberto Firmino scored an equalizer in the 87th minute to give Liverpool a 2-2 draw and harm Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League.

When Arsenal jumped out to a quick two-goal lead at Anfield, the Merseyside team mounted a heroic comeback. The Brazilian striker climbed at the far post to finish the feat.

Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli had given the league’s leaders the upper hand. Nevertheless, Mohamed Salah cut the lead in half before missing a penalty after the interval.

Firmino scored a goal that may decide the championship battle as Arsenal seemed poised to increase its advantage over Manchester City to eight points.

Everything had been going so well for the visitors until Martinelli put them in front in the eighth minute by capitalizing on Virgil van Dijk’s error.

As Van Dijk’s attempted clearing went directly into his path, the striker sprinted toward goal and slid a low shot past Alisson.

Martinelli crossed for Gabriel Jesus, a fellow Brazilian, to head in from close range as Arsenal took a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute.

Up until Liverpool produced a reaction, Mikel Arteta’s club was cruising and the Anfield fans was quiet.

Jordan Henderson’s poor shot was converted by Salah in the 42nd minute to bring the score to 2-1.

After the break, Liverpool pushed forward and was given a penalty seven minutes later, giving them a chance to tie the game.

Diogo Jota was knocked to the ground by Rob Holding, but Salah missed his opportunity to convert from the penalty spot.

Up until Firmino’s goal, Liverpool had the better opportunities, with substitute Darwin Nunez beating Aaron Ramsdale into a save. But, Arsenal seemed to be hanging on for an important victory.

If not for Ramsdale’s two saves in the dying moments to save Salah and Ibrahima Konate, it may have been worse for the London club.

The organization in charge of professional referees has also announced that it will investigate an altercation between assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis and referee Andy Robertson.

According to video replays, Hatzidakis raised his arm as he hit the Liverpool defender.
