In response to the controversy surrounding BJP lawmaker Ramesh Bidhuri’s remarks on BSP MP Danish Ali, Kodikunnil Suresh, the top whip for the opposition party in the Lok Sabha, wrote to Speaker Om Birla on Saturday to urge the immediate suspension of the South Delhi MP. Suresh said that Bidhuri’s “vile and communal” words against Ali had caused the House great humiliation.
After Birla threatened the BJP MP with “strict action” if his actions were repeated, Suresh is one of numerous opposition figures calling for severe punishment for Bidhuri.
At the time of the occurrence, Suresh, a member of the chairperson’s panel, was preside over the Lok Sabha sessions. When neither the Speaker nor the Deputy Speaker are present, one of the panel’s members preside over House proceedings.
The Congress leader observed that since the translation services were subpar and the House was exploding in anger, he was unable to understand the precise meaning of the Bidhuri’s statements. However, seeing the gravity of the situation, he made sure that the hateful comments were removed forever.
BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri used derogatory language towards BSP MP Danish Ali while addressing in the Lok Sabha on Thursday during the late-night debate on the accomplishments of India’s space program and the launch of Chandrayaan-3.
He added that an MP “behaving like a hatemonger in the hallowed halls of our democracy is a shocking aberration which must never be tolerated” and that the issue should be brought up before the privilege committee so that Ali may get justice.
“I am sending this letter to suggest that you act as soon as possible on the issue listed below. It has been my goal to protect the August House’s principles and safeguard the spirit of the constitution ever since I took on the duty of being a member of the panel of Lok Sabha Chairpersons, the MP added.
The Congress lawmaker went on to say that Ramesh Bidhuri, a BJP MP, misbehaved and caused enormous embarrassment to the house, which was the “most appalling and unfortunate incident” that “shook the very core of every value to which we all stand guard.”
Suresh declared himself to be “utterly shocked” and “absolutely repulsed” by the idea that a “Member of Parliament of the ruling party could openly make such heinous comments and make derogatory remarks, based on a fellow member’s religion and threaten him with assault outside the parliament precincts.”
He said that a member of parliament “behaving like a hatemonger in the hallowed halls of our democracy is a shocking aberration which must never be tolerated” and that the episode had caused the House “unfathomable shame and loss of dignity.”
“The very House has turned into a site of religious intolerance and prejudice against a Member of Parliament. The House is where the Constitution is kept and basic rights are secured.
In order to ensure that Danish Ali MP, who was insulted and harassed in the Lok Sabha, receives justice as soon as possible, Suresh urged the adoption of the strictest measures against Ramesh Bidhuri MP, including his suspension from the House and an express referral of the matter to the Privileges Committee.
Rajnath Singh, the defense minister, had expressed remorse at Bidhuri’s comments in the House, and the BJP had sent the South Delhi MP a show-cause notice.
