Russian Foreign Ministry: US-S. Korea Nuclear Agreement Would Damage Global Stability

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the new nuclear deal agreed by the US and South Korea would compromise global stability and have a detrimental impact on regional security.
The Ministry’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, issued a statement on Friday saying, “We took notice of reports about an agreement that was struck between the US and the ROK (the Republic of Korea) on collaborative planning with respect to the use of nuclear weapons.
“This development is obviously unstable… and will affect global stability as well as have gravely detrimental effects on regional security, according to the statement.
The statement claims that by committing to policies of “extended nuclear deterrence,” the US and its allies are replicating tactics that Washington has been using with its NATO partners and NATO allies for decades since the Cold War.
Additionally, it warned that such actions will ultimately jeopardise global security, fuel further tensions, trigger security crises, and ignite an arms race.
The statement said, “We urge the US and its allies to refrain from actions that weaken the overall level of security for all states.”
As a result of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s visit to the US, the US and South Korea jointly published the Washington Declaration on April 26.
The declaration, according to reports, states that the US will upgrade the extended deterrence it offers to South Korea, including improved consultation over a nuclear crisis, increased military drills and training activities, table-top simulation, the establishment of a new Nuclear Consultative Group, and a further expansion of the US regular visibility of strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula.
