Mrinal Basumatary has been arrested for allegedly harassing young female athletes at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) training center in Solalgaon, North Lakhimpur, Assam. This comes after many athletes there accused him of doing so.
In response to the allegation, a FIR has been filed against Basumatary at a police station in Guwahati.
The SAI officials said in a statement on Friday that female athletes filed the complaint after a female weightlifting teacher did so on May 18.
They claimed that Mrinal Basumatary, the manager of STC Solalgoan, had harassed female athletes sexually. The regional office of the Sports Authority of India in Guwahati immediately acted in line with the legislation surrounding sexual harassment after receiving their verbal complaint.
“Considering the seriousness of the situation, a FIR has been filed. In addition, an investigation has already been started and the subject has been sent to the internal committee of the regional center of the nodal sports authority. The committee will provide its report as soon as possible.
In addition, it said that “SAI adopts a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment cases, and the same will be followed so as to ensure that justice is delivered to our athletes.”
Basumatary has not yet been the subject of any police action. Since the alleged crime is believed to have occurred there, the case has been moved to the Lakhimpur police station.
The police have not yet made a comment on this incident.
