A total of 54 fatalities and approximately 400 hospitalizations have been reported at Ballia District Hospital in Uttar Pradesh over the past three days, coinciding with the intensifying heatwave in the region. While doctors have cited various causes for the deaths, they believe that the severe heat could be a contributing factor. The surge in hospital admissions is primarily attributed to the extreme heat, according to medical professionals. Most areas in Uttar Pradesh are experiencing temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
The sudden spike in deaths and the influx of patients seeking treatment for symptoms such as fever, respiratory difficulties, and other ailments have overwhelmed the hospital, prompting the staff to be on high alert.
SK Yadav, the in-charge Medical Superintendent at District Hospital Ballia, reported that 23 patients died on June 15, followed by 20 deaths the next day, and 11 deaths yesterday.
Dr. BP Tiwari, the Additional Health Director of Azamgarh Circle, has announced that a team from Lucknow will be dispatched to investigate whether there is an undetected disease causing these fatalities. He speculated that the rise in temperatures might have contributed to the deaths of individuals with respiratory conditions, diabetes, and high blood pressure, as such individuals are more vulnerable in extreme weather conditions.
The rush of patients at the district hospital has led to a shortage of stretchers, forcing many attendants to carry their loved ones to the emergency ward on their shoulders. However, the Additional Health Director stated that although it becomes challenging when ten patients arrive simultaneously, they do have an adequate supply of stretchers.
