Shreyas Iyer, a middle order batsman for Team India and the legendary captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, had successful back surgery in London but will now be unable to play in the next World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.
Iyer had back surgery on Tuesday in London, according to a report, and the Mumbai batter should recover fully by the ODI World Cup 2023 later this year.
The 28-year-old just recently achieved a full recovery from a back ailment, and he returned in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 before suffering a setback. Iyer participated in the first two days of the most recent Test match against Australia before being sidelined.
His back ailment required surgery, which was successfully done, but the middle order batter will also miss the forthcoming WTC final at the Oval in London in addition to the IPL 2023 season.
According to the aforementioned article, Shreyas Iyer would likely miss the next three months while he heals from the back problem. He will thus be out of shape for the WTC final, but he should be back to full strength by the ODI World Cup later this year.
Iyer, who has been an important member of the Indian side, scored the most runs in ODIs last year. Along with him, another player who has struggled with back problems is the top bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who just had surgery.
According to a recent BCCI statement, Bumrah has already started his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, however it is still unknown if he will be fully recovered in time for the WTC final, which will take place from June 7 to 11.
Nitish Rana is in charge of the Kolkata Knight Riders in Iyer’s absence, but the team has struggled thus far in IPL 2023, losing three straight games after being defeated by Delhi Capitals by four wickets.
