In a heartbreaking event, a 9-year-old girl committed herself in Tamil Nadu after receiving reprimands from her father for her subpar academic performance. The girl’s father reportedly reprimanded her for not doing well in school and urged her to work harder. The tragedy happened in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.

On Tuesday night, the girl’s mother allegedly discovered her hanging from the ceiling of their home. She immediately called the police, who opened a file and are looking into the situation. The corpse of the girl has been sent for a post-mortem.

How did it take place?

The girl’s father, Krishnamurthy, instructed her to go home and study on Monday when he observed her playing close to his in-laws’ home. He then departed to refuel his bicycle and arrived back at his house at 8:15 p.m. He requested his daughter to unlock the door after realizing that the home was locked from the inside.

Krishnamurthy grew concerned when the girl didn’t answer and shattered a window to get into the residence. He discovered his daughter inside, dangling from a cotton towel around her neck and gasping for air. She was sent to the hospital right away but was pronounced dead when she got there.

The event has shocked the neighborhood and brings attention to the pressure kids in India feel to do well in school. The terrible tragedy serves as a reminder that parents and educators should place a higher priority on children’s emotional health and wellbeing than just academic achievement.
