Twila Kilgore has been named the temporary head coach of the US women’s football team after the squad’s elimination from the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. The action follows Vlatko Andonovski’s departure from the position as coach after the team’s unexpected World Cup elimination. The US team is looking for a permanent position.
The US women’s team has won four championships, making them the most successful team in the competition’s history. However, their 2023 campaign was their poorest ever, as they were eliminated in the round of 16. Andonovski left the defeat. “While we are all disappointed in the result of the globe Cup this year, I am really proud of the advancements achieved by this squad, the support they have shown for one another, and the motivation they have given to players all around the globe.

Andonovski stated in a statement, “I will be eternally grateful to the U.S. Soccer Federation for providing me the opportunity to coach this wonderful squad.

Notably, Kilgore will captain the USWNT against South Africa in exhibition matches on September 21 in Cincinnati and on September 24 in Chicago. This will be her first assignment with the team. During the four years of Andonovski’s employment, she served as his assistant. In the meanwhile, Matt Crocker, the sporting director for US Soccer, will oversee the search for a new coach.

We must keep evolving and innovating, and we are enthusiastic about the road ahead, said Crocker in a statement. “We are aware of the difficulties and have spoken to participants from several facets of our sport, including players, coaches, and other people involved in the soccer community. Our forward-looking strategy has been greatly influenced by the thoughts and viewpoints shared during these sessions, the speaker said.
