At Kavaraippettai railway station near Chennai on Friday night, the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express (Train No. 12578) collided with a halted freight train, injuring about 19 passengers.
Twelve passenger train coaches derailed as a result of the collision, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the Chennai-Gudur stretch between Ponneri and Kavaraippettai stations.
What caused the derailment of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express?
The train was intended to pass past the station, not halt at Kavaraippettai, according to Southern Railways general manager RN Singh. The driver correctly obeyed the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express signals after departing Chennai. Nevertheless, the train mistook the loop route for the main line and collided with the freight train as a result.
He went on to say that further research is needed to determine the cause of this.
“The train encountered a severe shock as it approached the Kavarapettai station. Rather than following the signal and joining the main line, it entered a loop line at a speed of 75 kmph. It struck a freight train positioned on the loop line from the rear’, stated another officer.
