According to a WhatsApp announcement, Android users will soon be able to log in without a password using passkeys. This implies that during initial setup, users will be able to log in to the app using biometrics like fingerprints, faces, or PINs.

WhatsApp said on X, the platform that replaced Twitter, that “Android users can easily and securely log back in with passkeys only your face, finger print, or pin unlocks your WhatsApp account.”

It should be noted that the function was already accessible to beta testers last month in September, thus it was just a matter of time until it became accessible to all users. Of course, Android users are already receiving it.

This is in response to Google’s recent request that users create passkeys for quick and painless logins.

The day may soon come when using a password is obsolete because to the increasing number of applications that are switching to passkeys for sign-in. However, popular applications like WhatsApp, which are used by many, continue to progressively add functionality until that time.

Although it is unclear when WhatsApp passkey functionality will be available to iOS users, it shouldn’t be long now that it is available to Android users.

In similar news, it’s been reported that WhatsApp is putting the finishing touches on a feature for WhatsApp online that might allow users to quickly search for specific messages they sent on a given date. This feature, according to WABetaInfo, would let users choose a date on WhatsApp Web using a calendar UI.
